The University of Southampton’s BSc Podiatry degree course lasts three years and attracts a government bursary of 3,630 to help students meet the cost of studying.

Southampton’s BSc podiatry course enables graduates to register to practice with the Health Professionals Council. It can also entitle them to embark on a further programme of study at a higher level.

Students on the BSc Podiatry course at Southampton explore both theory and practice in a host of environments: from general clinics right through to surgery. They are trained in the diagnosis and management of foot disorders, as well as how to administer a range of treatments.

It is the job of a podiatrist to manage disease and disorder of the lower limb. The foot is an extremely complicated structure, problems with which can have a huge effect on the overall health of a patient.

In practice, patient management can range from treatment of nail and skin disease, to minor surgery, to the mechanical correction of gait and posture, and more complex surgical techniques besides.

Whilst on work placement BSc Podiatry students get to see what the job involves, and also have the opportunity to speak to practising podiatrists about their experiences.

BSc Podiatry graduates moving into practice treat many different groups of patients, many of whom have a wide range of systemic problems, such as: diabetes, poor circulation, rheumatoid arthritis, skin disorders or those who have more specific lower limb disorders.

All applicants for the BSc Podiatry course at Southampton are strongly advised to organise opportunities to shadow practising podiatrists in a variety of settings in order to find out whether it is the right career for them.
